A sermon from the wrong pulpit

The quote that passed

What matters most is how well you walk through the fire.

Said by Charles Bukowski, in “How Is Your Heart?” (The Last Night of the Earth Poems, 1992)

Charles Bukowski was a drunk, pockmarked post office clerk with a face like somebody dropped a lasagna down the stairs, and he still got laid more than a lifeguard at a swingers' resort.

The man wrote poems between hangovers, lost fistfights in alleys, and walked through the fire with a beer in each hand. Meanwhile you've been "going through a rough patch" for 3 years, which is an adorable way of saying you've been lying on the couch eating shredded cheese straight out of the bag like a raccoon with a Hulu subscription.

Here's the part nobody tells you, dipshit: the fire isn't optional. You're getting burned either way. You can burn going after the thing you actually want, or you can slow-roast for 40 years in a job, a relationship, and a zip code you picked because it had good parking. Cowardice doesn't save you from the heat, it just turns the flame down to low. You're not playing it safe, buddy, you're a gas station hot dog rolling under the heat lamp since 2014, telling everyone you're "keeping your options open."

And Halloween is coming, which is perfect, because you've been wearing a costume all year. The "I'm fine" costume. The "I'll start Monday" costume. The "I'm just not a risk person" costume, which is basically a sexy nurse outfit made of excuses, except nobody's getting laid. You walk through life clenched like you're holding in a Taco Bell emergency during a job interview. Nobody's scared of your little ghost sheet. The only things haunting your house are the treadmill you use as a fucking coat rack and the "big idea" in your Notes app, rotting next to a grocery list from 2019.

Your move

So here's your move, sweatpants: pick the one thing you've been dodging so long it gets its own mail, and do the first ugly 10 minutes of it before noon today. Send the email. Make the call. Post the thing. Set a timer, park your ass in the chair, and don't get up until you've stuck at least 1 finger in the fire. You'll be bad at it. Bukowski was bad at plenty, mostly sobriety and showering, and he still made it count. Walk through the fire badly if you have to, but walk through it, because the alternative is dying warm, dry, and completely fucking forgettable.

Life is too fucking boring not to try. LaDiabla
