The quote that passed
He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.
Said by Friedrich Nietzsche, in Twilight of the Idols (1889)
Friedrich Nietzsche had a mustache you could hide a family of raccoons in, migraines that would make you call in sick for a fucking decade, and a dating record so bad it should be studied by scientists.
He proposed to Lou Salomé, got rejected, and then went and wrote a whole book about God being dead while you can't finish a 12-minute YouTube video without checking your phone 4 times. The man was half-blind, broke, and puking his guts out in cheap boarding houses, and he still cranked out philosophy that people are fighting about 130 years later. You can't even put away the clean laundry. It's been in that chair so long it's got squatter's rights.
Here's your problem, dipshit: you don't have a why. You have a vibe. You have a Pinterest board, an "eventually," and 3 half-read self-help books holding up a wobbly table. So every how feels like torture. Waking up early? Torture. Going to the gym? A war crime. Answering one email? You need a nap and a hug. Of course you can't bear the how. You're carrying 40 pounds of effort with zero reason, like hauling a couch up 5 flights of stairs for a stranger who already moved out. No wonder your back hurts and your soul smells like old Doritos.
And don't tell me your why is "being comfortable." Comfort isn't a why, buddy, it's a waiting room with better snacks. You've been comfortable for years and look at you: scrolling at 2 AM with one hand in a bag of chips and the other in your sweatpants, watching a stranger renovate a kitchen you will never own. Your ambition has the sex drive of a damp mattress. Your dreams don't even text you anymore, they just like your stories out of pity. If your life had a soundtrack, it would be the dishwasher beeping because you forgot to start it again.
Your move
So today, write your why on a piece of paper in one ugly, honest sentence. Not a mission statement, not some LinkedIn horseshit about "driving impact." Something that makes you a little embarrassed to say out loud, like "I want to stop being a coward" or "I want my kids to see me win at something." Tape it where you'll see it every time you reach for the remote. Then do one miserable how in its honor before the sun goes down: the call, the workout, the first page, the hard conversation. When your brain starts whining, read the paper and tell it to sit the fuck down. The how only hurts this much because you never gave it a reason.
