The Daily Rant ·

A sermon from the wrong pulpit

The quote that passed

Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage.

Said by Anaïs Nin, in The Diary of Anaïs Nin, Volume 3 (1939–1944)

Anaïs Nin wrote porn for a dollar a page during World War 2, banged her way through half of literary Paris, and kept a diary so long it needed its own zip code.

That woman lived so loud her journal had a hangover. Meanwhile you hovered over "Reply All" for 11 minutes this week, sweating like a ham in a sauna, then typed "Sounds good!" with an exclamation point you didn't fucking mean. Anaïs was writing dirty books for rent money, and you can't even ask the barista to remake a latte she clearly brewed with mop water.

Here's the math, dipshit: your life is exactly as big as the last scary thing you did. If the last scary thing was trying the spicy ranch, congratulations, your entire world is the size of a Chili's booth. You didn't get stuck, you shrink-wrapped yourself. Every "maybe next month" is another layer of plastic, and now you're a leftover in the back of your own fridge, labeled "potential" in Sharpie, quietly growing fur.

And don't hand me "I'm waiting for the right time." The right time is a myth, like a 5-minute plumber visit or a guy on a dating app who's actually 6 feet. Your comfort zone isn't a zone, buddy, it's a waiting room with a TV stuck on QVC, and you've sat in it so long your ass has fused to the chair like a cheap vinyl skin graft. Your dreams aren't dead, they're on life support, and you keep kicking the plug out of the wall on your way to the fridge. Your courage has the muscle tone of a jellyfish that got laid off.

Your move

So today, before lunch, do 1 thing that makes your palms sweat and your bowels file a formal complaint with HR. Send the message you've rewritten 9 times like a serial killer polishing a ransom note. Ask for the money. Post the thing. Say the true sentence out loud to the person who needs to hear it. Anything you push to "tonight" dies on the couch next to your self-respect and a half-eaten bag of Doritos. If your heart isn't pounding like it's trying to escape your ribcage and get a restraining order, it's not courage, it's an errand.

Life is too fucking boring not to try. LaDiabla
