A sermon from the wrong pulpit

The quote on trial

Money can't buy happiness.

Said by a fridge magnet, author unknown, probably some douchebag with a trust fund

LaDiabla laughing on a red jet ski in turquoise water off a palm-lined beach, in a straw hat, sunglasses and a black shirt over black lace, fanning a fistful of hundred-dollar bills while more fly off behind her.

Money can't buy happiness? Bullshit. Money buys a jet ski, and I've never seen a single sad bastard on a jet ski. Money buys tacos at 2 AM, a therapist who actually listens, and the luxury of telling your boss to go fuck himself. The people saying this line come in 2 types: rich assholes who forgot what rent feels like, and broke assholes who need a bedtime story. Both are lying to you.

Look at what being broke actually feels like. Checking your bank balance with one eye closed like it's a horror movie. Saying "I'm good, I already ate" when you haven't. Staying in a shit relationship because splitting the lease is scarier than splitting up. Poverty isn't humble or noble, it's a 24-hour panic attack with bad lighting. Nobody ever stared at an overdraft notice and felt spiritually enriched.

Here's the part the fridge magnet leaves out. Money won't fix you. If you're a miserable prick at $30K, you'll be a miserable prick with a boat at $3 million. It doesn't buy happiness, it buys options, and options are pretty fucking close. Freedom from the bullshit is the whole game, and money is the key to the door. Anyone who tells you to stop chasing it wants you to stay at the bottom where they can see you.

Your move

So today, quit pretending you're above money and look your finances dead in the eye. Write down exactly what you earn, what you owe, and what you blew last month on crap you don't remember buying. Then pick 1 move that makes more money this week. Ask for the raise, send the invoice you've been dodging, sell the junk in your closet, or pitch the side hustle you keep jerking off about. Then put the first $100 of it somewhere you can't touch it, and call it your Fuck-You Fund.
